Scene 4: Ireland

The Magdalene Sisters

I'm going to take a break from the heart warming animations for just a second to talk about a different movie I saw this week. I figured it was perfect for this blog because I doubt the plot or characters would have worked quite so well if the movie was set anywhere else.

The Magdalene Sisters is about the Magdalene Asylums or also known as Magdalena Laundries, where girls who were disowned by their families for being indecent were sent. It was founded by nuns who hoped that through work the girls would repent for their sins. The girls in the laundries would clean the clothes from the hospitals however, there have been many cases of abuse in these asylums. Only after a mass grave was discovered where 1993 where 155 corpses were buried at the grounds of a former convent in Dublin did people realise the extent of the suffering.

The first asylum in Ireland opened on Leeson street in Dublin in 1765, founded by Lady Arabella Denny. The 2002 movie directed by  Peter Mullan, is based on historical facts about four girls sent to a Dublin Magdalene Laundry from 1964 to 1968.
What is interesting about the setting is that it was set in Ireland it was shot in a location in Dumfries and Galloway in South-West Scotland.

And scene,
That's a wrap.
